Headline: "Be Yourself… But Which Version?" – Office, Instagram, or Late-Night Existential?
We've all heard the advice: "Just be yourself." It sounds simple. Until you sit down and realize you have no idea which "self" they're asking for.
The confident leader who commands the boardroom? The carefully curated optimist posting golden-hour selfies? Or the 2 a.m. version who lies awake wondering if any of it actually means anything?
The truth is, you're not fake. You're fractured. And in a hyper-connected world, those fractures are starting to show.
The Three Versions We All Live With
· The Office Version: Polished, solution-oriented, slightly caffeinated. Uses words like "synergy" and "circle back" without irony. This version has a 401(k) and opinions about quarterly targets.
· The Instagram Version: Aesthetic, aspirational, emotionally filtered. This version just finished a gratitude journal and a smoothie bowl. Life looks good—even when it isn't. Especially when it isn't.
· The Late-Night Existential Version: Unfiltered, tired, and terrifyingly honest. This version questions every career choice, relationship, and life decision. It doesn't post. It just stares at the ceiling at 1:47 AM.
Here's the secret most leaders won't tell you:
None of these versions are the "real" you. And all of them are.
The problem isn't that you have different versions. The problem is when you mistake one for the whole picture. When you bring the Instagram version into a performance review, you look delusional. When you bring the late-night version into a networking event, you look unhinged. When you bring the office version home to your family, you look cold.
So how do you actually "be yourself"?
Stop trying to merge all three. Start knowing which version belongs where.
Authenticity isn't about showing every version to everyone. It's about knowing which version is appropriate for the room—without losing access to the others. The most grounded people I know don't have one personality. They have a controlled vocabulary of selves. They choose intentionally. Not reactively.
Your office self isn't a lie. Your Instagram self isn't a fraud. Your 3 AM self isn't a failure. They're just different tools for different jobs.
The real question isn't "which version is real?" It's "which version am I choosing right now—and why?"
Stop asking permission to be one thing. You were never meant to be.
